Les Kirsh returns

Soul is what Les Kirsh was all about. Soul is what Les Kirsh is still all about, now that he has resumed his singing career after many years away from the spotlight.

Just as Les’ career was picking up during the mid 70s, an unfortunate car crash put an end to his glory days, until now. Since his son uncovered a host of recordings from back in the day, he has urged his father to get back to what he does best.

Consequently, Les joined forces with famed producer Andy Whitmore, who took these old recordings and re-worked them into something with a more modern sound, that still reflected Les’ humble origins in soul.

As a result, three tracks have been formed from their partnership, these being: ‘Say’, ‘La La La’ and ‘Tell Me To My Face’, which take on elements of reggae, pop, dance and of course, soul, which is always at the heart of Les’ music. His adaptability only goes to show his prowess as a fully-fledged songwriter extraordinaire.

ImSoMaleek LP Review

ImSoMaleek a Wyclef Jean protegé from Brooklyn, will be releasing his debut album, Insomniak, later next month. No stranger to the world of music, ImSoMaleek was lead singer in a band with his two older brothers 3on3 and also appeared in the Broadway Musical Lion King as well as venturing into other music endeavours.

                IMG_0272

With the guiding hand of Wyclef Jean and drawing from influences such as Usher, Frank Ocean and Justin Timberlake, ImSoMaleek brings out a solid debut album, blending R&B, soul, while adding touches of pop, and drawing on his roots in classical training.

Tipped to become a familiar name in the R&B world, as well as the world of popular music, this debut album is overall a fine achievement. The album has a smooth flowing contemporary sound with stand out tracks including, Sometimes ft. Oswin Benjamin, and Raindrops, a ballad with poignant lyrics and which best displays his vocal talents. Overall, a compelling debut from someone who we will probably see a lot more of in the future.

Our top recommendation this week is…

Lianne La Havas!

Having grown huge numbers of fans since her break-through track “Is Your Love Big Enough?” in 2012 she is still a fresh voice in the crowd.

Her 2015 album Blood is one not to be missed out of your collection.

Maintaining the elegance of her folk-soul beginnings, the Londoner explores bolder directions on her second album. Announcing this new daring, the psychedelic soul of opener “Unstoppable” slips into a warm, snapping groove on “Green & Gold”. From the gritty pop strut of “What You Don’t Do” to the delicate “Wonderful”, Blood’s changing tones suit an agile voice that can shift from fragility to fire in a captivating instant.

She has more recently released an EP Blood Solo. It’s a collection of songs from the album “Blood” but interpreted completely solo – just by Lianne and a series of guitars.
The EP also includes one brand new song entitled “Fairytale”.

REVIEW: Ronoc delivers new single ‘No More’

Capture2

This invigorating blend of pop, rock and soul is the work of singer-songwriter Ronoc.

It revolves lyrically around a struggling relationship, Ronoc injecting genuine emotion into his vocal performance.

The instrumental meanwhile is a vaguely jazzy mix of guitars and folksy violins.

It follows the success of his previous single ‘Battling on’.

Enigmatic pop songstress Elaine Blake brings out debut single

9682 (140)a

Nottingham native Elaine Blake is a dynamic gospel and soul singer with a passion for pop is set to unveil her new single ‘The Backdoor Man’ early next year. Having worked on numerous radio stations and played with jazz bands and girl gospel groups, Elaine is ready to unveil her own creative offering.

Elaine Blake was born in Clarendon – Jamaica and raised in Nottingham. She spent most of her adolescent there and was joined in the holy union of marriage in the jewel of the Midlands. Politically minded, Elaine spent 12 years as a local councillor in Newcastle where she encountered people from all walks of life that subsequently inspired her music and lyricism. She wanted to embody what makes people happy and put on smile on people’s faces.

She describes herself as a sensual, spicy and happy go lucky person and her music translates these qualities perfectly. Her latest offering ‘Back Door Man’ is a joyous song inspired by her eldest son’s love for cooking in the kitchen at the back of the house and the beauty of friendship.

Elaine cites influences ranging from RnB, soul and pop and sounds like a combination of Macey Gray and Tracy Chapman by way of Natalie Cole and Chaka Khan. She has mastered the ability of writing a catchy song with meaning and is well on her way to cementing herself as a pop staple with the short, sharp and sensual hit ‘The Backdoor Man’

The new single from Elaine Blake is out on February 12th

Court Royal ask you to ‘Watch Yourself’ with new single

Release on May 29th through Fly on the Wall Records

Court Royal are a four piece band based in Liverpool/London who specialise in funk and soul laden pop, earning comparisons to the likes of Bruno Mars, Prince, Jamiroquai, Maroon 5 and George Clinton. These comparisons alone are high praise indeed, but when you can say you’ve gained approval from the likes of Charles Wright – writer of timeless classic ‘Express Yourself’ – you know you’re on to a winner.

Their new single ‘Watch Yourself’, is further proof that they are hitting all the right notes in the UK music industry. Approached by a Sony producer who heard their music and wanted to get involved, he helped co-produce the single at Liverpool’s Motor Museum studios. This producer, who has previously recorded with Iggy Azalea, Lily Allen, and Britney, loved working with the band so much that he has committed to helping out on future tracks as well.

In the meantime, ‘Watch Yourself’ is a grooving triumph, encouraging people to work for what they believe in despite what others think of their talents. It’s a positive message in a world that’s all too negative sometimes, and you can hear it for yourself here: https://soundcloud.com/court-royal-1/watchyourself-mastered-mp3cutnet

With the single due on May 29th, the next couple of months are set to be very busy for Court Royal. May 24th sees them play a hugely anticipated show at Goodison Park, the home of Everton Football Club, while in August they will take to the stage as part of the bill at the prestigious Strawberry Fields Festival. And, with an upcoming album already in the bag, it’s unlikely things will quieten down for Court Royal anytime soon.

Yo New Single ‘Shake It’ !

Unique single set to be released on June 15th

Currently based in New Orleans – the birthplace of soul and jazz – Yo are a rock band not afraid to go against the grain. After travelling the globe and making homes in various corners of the USA and Europe, the music and songwriting draws upon a wealth of inspirations and tales from the road.

The latest single taken from the album will be the hard hitting, punk laced track ‘Shake It’ – dripping in punchy bass-lines, quasi-spoken vocals and a distinctly trippy sensibility.

You can hear the track here:

Watch the video here:

‘Shake It’ as a track shows just one of the many facets and styles that make Yo such an exciting band with such a successful future ahead. Each track is specifically influenced by the place, time and events of its birth, so pinning down a genre is something of a challenge.

The single is taken from the album ‘Vagrancy’, an LP which demonstrates perfectly the versatile nature of Yo’s songwriting. Songs such as ‘Shake It’ are seemingly built for the high energy of live performance, but other tracks on the album suit different environments. Whether chilling out at a festival, going for it on a club dancefloor, jumping around at a live gig or relaxing in a local pub, on this album there will be a song that fits perfectly to every situation.

Single ‘Shake It’ will be available from June 15th.
