Our top recommendation this week is…

Lianne La Havas!

Having grown huge numbers of fans since her break-through track “Is Your Love Big Enough?” in 2012 she is still a fresh voice in the crowd.

Her 2015 album Blood is one not to be missed out of your collection.

Maintaining the elegance of her folk-soul beginnings, the Londoner explores bolder directions on her second album. Announcing this new daring, the psychedelic soul of opener “Unstoppable” slips into a warm, snapping groove on “Green & Gold”. From the gritty pop strut of “What You Don’t Do” to the delicate “Wonderful”, Blood’s changing tones suit an agile voice that can shift from fragility to fire in a captivating instant.

She has more recently released an EP Blood Solo. It’s a collection of songs from the album “Blood” but interpreted completely solo – just by Lianne and a series of guitars.
The EP also includes one brand new song entitled “Fairytale”.

Missed the Bowie train?

David Bowie has been instrumental to many through out all areas of their lives. However, not everyone caught the man in time. Fortunately he lives on through his music and you can still have a listen and discover a new side of bowie you connect with.

Roughly Recommended’s suggestion is “Lodger”.

The album shows how Bowie absorbs whatever culture he’s around and brings them to life through sounds and lyrics. You can stream the entire album on Youtube here:

The album, released in 1979, is part of the infamous Berlin Trilogy and a severely underrated release from Mr Jones.  Boys Keep Swinging was a hit for Bowie from the album at the time but in the modern age his song Heroes from that album has become well known thanks to the film The Perks Of Being A Wallflower.

New eclectic album Call of The Ancient Love from Stan Gemes blends Hindu, Russian and English into a captivating sonic cocktail

If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music …I get most joy in life out of music.” -Albert Einstein

The words of Albert Einstein have influenced many across the globe and across decades but it is rare to have him as a musical influence.  This is how the musical innovator Stan Gemes sets out his vision for the debut album ‘Call Of Ancient Love’, with a musical thoroughness that would make Einstein proud combining studious efforts relating to cultures as diverse as Hindu, English and Russian.

Stream live fest version of ‘Call of the Ancient Love’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzDMuM-AhHw

The album is truly inspirational from astonishingly intricate packaging to the way it has been crafted which has entailed travelling to over 60 countries of the World for inspiration, from the golden beaches of San Francisco to the serenity of virgin Russian plains, during which he collected more than 600 CDs. Within the musical landscape of this album, you may well come across influences from Asian flutes to New York’s Broadway shows, the beauty and  intensity of African ethnic drums right through to Hispanic beats and ancient Indian choirs, a truly infectious musical cocktail.

Call of The Ancient Love was inspired by a life changing experience involving a mesmerising spiritual performance carried out by an Indian tribe, the power of which he felt ‘arose that night and made each and every single observer at this event embrace emotionally the musical traditions of their own country.’ The impact of that night made him develop a deep love of Indian cultural manuscripts and traditions , then ultimately create the album with the only title he felt fitted, that being , ‘Call of Ancient Love’.

This album is not just meant to be experienced on a music level it is also supposed to help in some ways to de-stress and untangle the worries of the listener. He simply wants those who get into his music to be hypnotized by its natural rhythm, taking the listener to a spiritual level, ‘breathing in the joy of music and breathing out the peace of the music.’ It is a case of wanting everyone who hears the album to feel they are creating their own movie in their own mind – an uplifting and moving musical experience.

Call of Ancient Love is set for release July 18th

Prince William has his sights on the hip hop throne with new single ‘Million Ways’

Having performed at last year’s SXSW festival, Houston rapper Prince William is an exciting new hip hop underdog on the rise.

His latest single ‘Million Ways’ sees him showing off his adept flow and wordplay skills. It centres lyrically around pushing one’s talents in order to be successful.

Stream the single here on Soundcloud:

https://soundcloud.com/glavish/million-ways

Written over a year ago, the rapper explains the inspiration behind it: ‘I was working the graveyard shift at a gas station one night (Winter ’14) and decided to play the instrumental on the loud speaker since I was the only one there. I must’ve played the instrumental 100 times that night and then as I was mopping the floor, the flow and the hook just naturally hit me and I recorded it on my next off day.’

Prince William’s inspiring self-confidence and rhymes are likely to appeal to fans of artists like Jay-Z, Childish Gambino and J Cole.

A highly self-motivated artist, Prince William has started a music career through his own determination and grit, setting up his very own record label Lavish Living Ent.

He explains the source of his drive: ‘When I decided to start making music, I called lots of old friends from Elementary all the way to High school and they all (exaggerated with “all” but pretty damn close) dismissed me and that helped me develop my “self-inspiring” attitude and I also learned to depend on myself much more than the average person.’

Prince William has always seen himself as an underdog. Upon entering a contest for indie rappers in 2013 led by local hip hop legend OG Ron C, the rap icon came up on stage and said “I don’t wanna hear music about your problems, if I wanted to hear about problems I would’ve stayed home and looked at bills. This is not the rap game, I want to see girls shake their asses and music I can dance to.”

Knowing from the start that he was different to the other rappers in the competition and that this statement was subliminally aimed at him, Prince William didn’t let it get in the way of his vision, having since proved OG wrong by performing at SXSW and scoring radio airplay from Kiss FM phoenix and an interview with KTSU Houston.

He hopes to continue onwards and upwards continuing to push his own record label and garner a worldwide fanbase.

REVIEW:BIG ZERO have a message for you from their synth-punk world!

And it originated in the past.

BIG ZERO’s track ‘Tear It Up and Start Again’ is an attitude filled punchy guitar/synth song that conjures the electronic magic of the 80’s but still feels like a new sound using their modern take on the world.

The ZERO’s clearly take a lot of inspiration from the era as the video for the track uses the legendary cult film ‘The Breakfast Club’ originally released in 1985, as their set up.

Watch it here: https://youtu.be/gVdg4PI-IyU

‘Tear It Up and Start Again’ comes from the bands EP ‘Mainstream Propaganda’ which, as you can tell, dips into BIG ZERO’s take on our society of dictated media as well as thoughts about the future of our relationship with technology.

BIG ZERO’s view is, “every day humans get closer to technological singularity, and we strongly believe that when that day comes, we will be judged on our ethical treatment and moral judgement when it came to how we developed robotic technology.” The guys certainly aren’t completely stuck in the 80s then…

“Mainstream Propaganda” is due for release May 20th 2016

New Release from Canadian band The Burning Hell

“There’s despair but always hope, and love comes in various forms. ‘Men Without Hats’ is a 1990s-indie pop tinged super catchy coming of age story, Kom beautifully sharing the anticipation, embarrassment, then release on buying his first (audiocassette!) single.” TheDigitalFix.com

The Burning Hell release Double A side new single ‘Men Without Hats’ / ‘Fuck the Government, I Love You’ from their latest album ‘Public Library’

The seventh Burning Hell album is a collection of eight short stories drawn from different sections of the bookshelf of the brain. A murder mystery rubs shoulders with a biography, while a romance leans against a prison diary. There’s a killer priest, a nameless band lost in Yorkshire, and Elvis and Michael Jackson moonwalking their way into space and/or global annihilation. Despair and hope go hand in hand here, and although Mathias Kom’s songwriting has never been wordier, the stories never stranger, and the band never louder, the essence of The Burning Hell remains constant: life is not really so bad, as long as you can laugh a little and you have something decent to read.

The Burning Hell is the alter-ego of Canadian songwriter Mathias Kom, and the band has been on the road in one form or another since 2007, playing everywhere from festivals like Glastonbury and Dawson City to bars, living rooms, abandoned bunkers, and a mental asylum in rural France. Musically, The Burning Hell runs the gamut from introspective folk to hyperactive rock and roll, and so the band can adapt to its surroundings like a karma of anthropomorphic chameleons, taking the audience on a supermarket-cart ride through hooky, upbeat pop songs, dark ballads about pet euthanasia, and anthems for barbarians, economic conferences, and love.
On occasion, Mathias goes on the road as a duo with clarinetist Ariel Sharratt, and their debut album “Ariel Sharratt & Mathias Kom: Don’t Believe The Hyperreal” came out in November 2015. More often, Mathias and Ariel are joined by bassist Nick Ferrio, drummer Jake Nicoll and guitarist Darren Browne. The Burning Hell release Public Library, a new album of distorted story-songs, in April 2016, and they’ll spend the better part of the spring and summer in their natural habitat: the tour van.

“Songwriter Mathias Kom, a mischievous, caustic people’s poet with a world view that lets you know the good guys occasionally win”
Q Magazine

“A lesson in wit and nuance”
Uncut

“Kom doesn’t try to create moments that are bigger than life. No, he focusses on life most basic elements combine in wonderful, magical reactions.Through Kom’s eyes we see life is for the living, not for the dreamers. The real rewards come from finding the hidden beauty in what we have, who we are and who we meet, not in what we desire”

Herohill, CA

“Canada’s The Burning Hell write the kind of literate, funny, catchy songs that makes you want to learn all the words and shout them passionately back in their faces.”

Enigmatic pop songstress Elaine Blake brings out debut single

9682 (140)a

Nottingham native Elaine Blake is a dynamic gospel and soul singer with a passion for pop is set to unveil her new single ‘The Backdoor Man’ early next year. Having worked on numerous radio stations and played with jazz bands and girl gospel groups, Elaine is ready to unveil her own creative offering.

Elaine Blake was born in Clarendon – Jamaica and raised in Nottingham. She spent most of her adolescent there and was joined in the holy union of marriage in the jewel of the Midlands. Politically minded, Elaine spent 12 years as a local councillor in Newcastle where she encountered people from all walks of life that subsequently inspired her music and lyricism. She wanted to embody what makes people happy and put on smile on people’s faces.

She describes herself as a sensual, spicy and happy go lucky person and her music translates these qualities perfectly. Her latest offering ‘Back Door Man’ is a joyous song inspired by her eldest son’s love for cooking in the kitchen at the back of the house and the beauty of friendship.

Elaine cites influences ranging from RnB, soul and pop and sounds like a combination of Macey Gray and Tracy Chapman by way of Natalie Cole and Chaka Khan. She has mastered the ability of writing a catchy song with meaning and is well on her way to cementing herself as a pop staple with the short, sharp and sensual hit ‘The Backdoor Man’

The new single from Elaine Blake is out on February 12th
