Introducing: Luna Blue

Introducing Brighton’s next big thing in the world of indie-pop – Luna Blue.

yHaving formed whilst studying at the University of Chichester, the band are embarking on the release of their debut EP Nightjar, along with the new single ‘Borrowed Words’ which is out 28th July.

Borrowing sounds from their inspirations such as The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Don Broco, Luna Blue create a funk-infused indie pop sound that bounces carelessly, flows seamlessly and always gets your foot tapping.

Consisting of Tom High (vocals/rhythm guitar), Ryan Wellman (lead guitar/backing vocals), Nick Davie (Bass/backing vocals) and Seb Bowen (drummer/backing vocals), Luna Blue’s ‘Borrowed Words’ exhibits the band at their funk-rock best, with driving, upbeat instrumentation and the wild, soaring vocals of front-man Tom, which focus on the intriguing topic of saying or doing something in order to please someone and fill another fantasy – in another sense – borrowing words.

Unfortunately, bassist Nick’s best friend was hit and killed by a drunk driver in 2015, but in her dedication, Luna Blue put on a spectacular live show, backed by a live orchestra where the band performed a number of their own tracks as well as memorable covers.

Coming from varying musical backgrounds, the boys join together a vast array of influences from all over the musical world. Whilst Ryan is strongly inspired by blues and progressive rock, particularly Pink Floyd, Seb and Nick enjoy delving into the seemingly contrasting realms of metal and jazz, and Tom considers legendary singer-songwriter, Jeff Buckley, his idol.

FFO: Two Door Cinema Club, The 1975, Foals

Slumberjack LP Review

Out of the U.S state of Florida come Slumberjack, a rock duo (Andrew Kelly and Dave Hanson), whose blend of raw and rowdy rock music with lingering somber melodies return with their debut LP, ‘Oddly Calm,’ after their debut EP, ‘Black Lodge,’ which was well received, and introduced their sound to a growing number of fans.

While being influenced by other rock outfits such as Pile and Colour Revolt they have maintained their distinct sound of powerful whisky drenched vocals, driving beats, lush melodies, and some nifty guitar work thrown in too – it is hard to believe that there is only two of them. There are some strong tracks on the LP. Ones that stand out are ‘Progression of a Chia Pet,’ which grows on you with each listen, and ‘People Eat Everything,’ with its charming lyrics and rich melody. For rock music fans, this is a must listen to, definitely not to be missed.

Rock Band ‘The Lightness Of Being’

It’s not only their musical backgrounds that are diverse; singer Gabriel is originally from Singapore, Sam has lived in Japan and the US and Sergio is from Poland. The band came together after Gabriel and Sergio struck up a chance conversation – and despite coming from all walks of life they soon began rehearsing and playing shows in London.

The Lightness of Being have already been backed by big names in the music industry – they have worked with The Breeders’ engineer Nick Trepka, played with up-and-coming blues rock band Graveltones, and have headlined venues around London. And with the release of ‘Movements’ they’re bound to turn even more heads in 2015.

Listen to ‘Unknown’ here:

‘Movements’ EP is due to be released on September 7th.

Go Primitive EP – ‘100 Ways’

That Go Primitive are associated with such names goes a long way to proving their credentials as they climb the independent music ladder. They have already supported The Subways, We Are The Ocean and others, getting a fantastic response from the big crowds along the way. This, along with the fact that they can count The Editors as fans, has given Go Primitive great confidence that they are on the right track.

It’s that confidence which has given rise in large part to the ‘100 Ways’ EP. In the band’s own words:

“The E.P is a show of our strength to overcome the struggles and constant roadblocks put in front of many bands at our stage. We hope that after countless efforts, this will be the E.P that makes our name stand up to the bigger acts out there and pushes us further in our musical journey.”

Always working hard on new material, their next release sees them on rollicking form with new EP ‘100 Ways’, a five song collection inspired by the many obstacles placed in front of independent musicians. Lead single ‘Breathe in, Bleed out’ sees them on typical top form, showing Go Primitive’s rock credentials in all their glory and going all out to bust through those obstacles…

Produced by Romesh Dodangoda (Kids in Glass Houses, Funeral For A Friend, Twin Atlantic, Motorhead, The Blackout, Bullet For My Valentine,  Lower Than Atlantis, Bring Me The Horizon), the EP is unsurprisingly dazzling in its depth of quality. The attention to detail that has gone into infusing these studio tracks with the energy of a live show is what will set them apart. That same attention to detail has also been extended to the excellent artwork, produced by Kids in Glass Houses front man Aled Phillips.

The ‘100 Ways’ EP is released July 13th.

Kinky Dove and new self-titled EP

3 track release set to be unleashed on June 15th

Born in in Australia but now living in London, Kindy Dove is the musical moniker of frontman Scott Wade and his evolving collective of musicians. Progenitors of gritty, driving rock, the group are readying themselves for a fresh assault on the music industry with a brand new three track EP.

Their particular brand of rock and roll, defined in many ways by the bluesy, post-rock growl of Wade on vocals, is currently in short supply both nationally and globally, and Kinky Dove are now looking to redress that balance.

For a taste of their punchy style, check out the video to EP track ‘Some Kind of Fool’, featuring an epic slap-happy montage of Hollywood moments.

The EP also features a remix/cover version of classic 1978 track ‘Another Girl Another Planet’ by The Only Ones – in this case titled simply ‘Another Girl’.

There is also a trance remix of ‘It’s Called Heartache’ on the EP. You can find the video for this at

The EP is online at

Produced by Chris Kimsey, previously of Olympic Studios, the EP marks Kinky Dove out as one of the earthiest rock bands on the scene. Fans of Scott Wade and Kinky Dove before they began working together, the producer understood the style and heights at which the music was aiming, and helped mould that vision into the musical reality that Kinky Dove has become.

The CD was mixed by Wade. Studio legend Phill Brown loved the sound of the CD, commenting that the mixes were “open and alive.”

The resulting EP is a continuation of form from previous album ‘Kinky Dove vol. 1’, and the latest step in Kinky Dove’s climb.

Expansive minimalism from debut Slows Down EP

IMG_2613 bw

Self-titled release is due to land on Feb 11th

Based in London and influenced by a heady cocktail of Swans, Spiritualized, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Radiohead,  60s pop, Middle Eastern classical music and more, Slows Down is the musical pseudonym of multi-talented solo artist Alexander Hawthorne.

A proficient self-taught multi-instrumentalist, he writes music which defies easy categorisation – exploding with multi-cultural ideas and independent in every sense. His debut EP, self-titled, will be available from February 11th, and you can hear an early taster here with ‘The Way Down Leering’:

https://soundcloud.com/slowsdown/the-way-down-leering

Written during spells in India and hitchhiking across the US, the EP is full of heavy themes presented with depth and a full on sound. All the many parts are played by Hawthorne himself, self-recorded and produced into one cohesive unit. But in spite of the broad instrumental strokes, the ideas are simple – minimalist even. It makes for a varied and versatile collection of tracks.

The EP is just the beginning of a longer project, in which Slows Down will continue to experiment in unique and creative ways. A full album will follow the EP, and he intends to bring together a group to perform live next year to perform these tracks in full, live for the first time. Thus far, due to Slows Down’s self-contained methodology, his music has lived in the studio and in recorded form. In spite of those limitations, the music is already getting a lot of positive feedback from previous single releases:

“I’ve grown to appreciate simplicity in music almost above all else. This is why, I think, I’ve fallen quite so hard for Slows Down.” – Matthew Healy, GoldFlakedPaint

“Taking advantage of the no compromise necessary freedom that only a true solo recording allows, as well as the opportunity to really sculpt the sound of these tracks with numerous overdubs and extremely careful manipulation, Hawthorne has created an extremely well defined world here” – Nathan Ford, The Active Listener

“A melancholic hypnosis of painstaking beauty. The track weeps from start to finish and manages to conjure some next level, swirling soundscapes. This is all from just one man, lets not forget that…” Phill Walker, One For The People

The EP will be available in vinyl and download forms from February 11th, and you can also look out for a free download of ‘Silent Night’ to be made available on Christmas Day.

River Child invites us under the ‘Lone City Lights’

Single taken from upcoming  debut EP ‘Start Over Again’

PRImage

A thoughtful singer songwriter based in North London, River Child is the creator of original indie-folk tunes with a soulful edge.

An ex-busker who got so much good feedback from his pavement performances he decided to take to the studio, with second single ‘Lone City Lights’ coming next.

Brilliant in its simplicity, the track marries a vocal reminiscent of Dylan with an upbeat shuffle rhythm which belies the darker lyrics, as well as mixing acoustic and jangling electric guitar to great effect. You can hear the song here:

Looking to build on his burgeoning reputation with this single, River Child is working hard on the London scene to keep turning heads – and with top quality, accessible music like this it shouldn’t be long until more and more eyes are on him.

Produced by Ian Wallman, this is music easy on the ear but written from the heart – a soulful reminder of how affecting a simple chord/melody combination can be.

‘Lone City Lights’ is out on January 19th
