Introducing: Luna Blue

Introducing Brighton’s next big thing in the world of indie-pop – Luna Blue.

yHaving formed whilst studying at the University of Chichester, the band are embarking on the release of their debut EP Nightjar, along with the new single ‘Borrowed Words’ which is out 28th July.

Borrowing sounds from their inspirations such as The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Don Broco, Luna Blue create a funk-infused indie pop sound that bounces carelessly, flows seamlessly and always gets your foot tapping.

Consisting of Tom High (vocals/rhythm guitar), Ryan Wellman (lead guitar/backing vocals), Nick Davie (Bass/backing vocals) and Seb Bowen (drummer/backing vocals), Luna Blue’s ‘Borrowed Words’ exhibits the band at their funk-rock best, with driving, upbeat instrumentation and the wild, soaring vocals of front-man Tom, which focus on the intriguing topic of saying or doing something in order to please someone and fill another fantasy – in another sense – borrowing words.

Unfortunately, bassist Nick’s best friend was hit and killed by a drunk driver in 2015, but in her dedication, Luna Blue put on a spectacular live show, backed by a live orchestra where the band performed a number of their own tracks as well as memorable covers.

Coming from varying musical backgrounds, the boys join together a vast array of influences from all over the musical world. Whilst Ryan is strongly inspired by blues and progressive rock, particularly Pink Floyd, Seb and Nick enjoy delving into the seemingly contrasting realms of metal and jazz, and Tom considers legendary singer-songwriter, Jeff Buckley, his idol.

Slumberjack LP Review

Out of the U.S state of Florida come Slumberjack, a rock duo (Andrew Kelly and Dave Hanson), whose blend of raw and rowdy rock music with lingering somber melodies return with their debut LP, ‘Oddly Calm,’ after their debut EP, ‘Black Lodge,’ which was well received, and introduced their sound to a growing number of fans.

While being influenced by other rock outfits such as Pile and Colour Revolt they have maintained their distinct sound of powerful whisky drenched vocals, driving beats, lush melodies, and some nifty guitar work thrown in too – it is hard to believe that there is only two of them. There are some strong tracks on the LP. Ones that stand out are ‘Progression of a Chia Pet,’ which grows on you with each listen, and ‘People Eat Everything,’ with its charming lyrics and rich melody. For rock music fans, this is a must listen to, definitely not to be missed.

They’ve just come off of an eastern U.S tour and are about to hit the roads again with their ‘Oddly Calm’ tour. While the new LP is being distributed worldwide through Sony Records / The Orchard right now.

Beldon Haigh marches on with latest protest song ‘Land of Hope’

Donald Trump was the first victim of Beldon Haigh’s expertly written protest songs, but now he has moved onto a much more pressing issue: that of the current refugee crisis.

Without a single person to aim his protest at, this was clearly a very different task for the experienced songwriter. Back in the 80s, Beldon played in a number of bands including Mikifin and Boxing Clever and he’s transferred his experiences from this into forming his beautifully crafted songs of significance.

The new single, ‘Land of Hope’ was inspired by the horrifying image of Alan Kurdi; a 3 year old Syrian boy who been washed up on a Mediterranean beach after his family had tried to reach Europe. It was an image that caused a media storm, but it also caused a storm in Beldon who simply had to combat what he’d seen by getting it down in a song. The result was ‘Land of Hope’.

Beldon’s follow up to the anti-Trump song ‘Freedom’, features more of the same classic songwriting tendencies that Beldon has built his name on, but with a more upbeat tone than his first single. Whilst ‘Land of Hope’ may seem a little too happy in tone for a song that’s addressing a serious issue of humanitarian concern, it is this that gives the song its rousing vibe and makes it feel like people should get up and do something about it.

All proceeds from ‘Land of Hope’ are being donated to IndiGo volunteers charity who are helping the aid agencies when it comes to providing logistics and support to the refugee crisis.

The power of instrumental music

When you hear someone mention ‘instrumental music’, you often think of classical, where the actual instruments are doing the speaking. Although this may have some negative connotations for some naive modern listeners, this is exactly the agenda that ambient rock band, The Outside Illusion, are pushing forward.

Releasing their new instrumental album, Silent Communication, on the 20th May, the band aim to speak to a wider audience of listeners with their emotive rock stylings.

Lead guitarist, Denis Salgado, believes that his guitar can speak just as much as any singer can with words, and this is the aesthetic that drives their music. Denis’ expert fret-work wails and screams, just like any voice might. After all, the voice is an instrument too.

Consequently, The Outside Illusion create an accessible brand of guitar led music, that isn’t just for the guitarists out there; Silent Communication is a highly listenable album, embellished with an electro-ambient edge, meaning that this is moving and emotion-fuelled music for the masses, not the few.

UK singer-songwriter Alan Bonner demonstrates unique nocturnal sound with new album ‘Night Music’

This is the type of music that will endure long after other fads and fashions have passed on by’ – Electric Harmony Blog

Mr. Bonner has the means of a pauper but sings with the heart of a king.’ – Surviving The Golden Age Blog

UK singer-songwriter Alan Bonner is set to deliver his third album, Night Music – a smoky, dimly-lit collection of songs inspired by London and its nocturnal inhabitance.

As Bonner puts it: ‘songs inspired by drinkers, thieves, prostitutes, spurned lovers, fallen rock stars and chance meetings with strangers on night buses. Songs inspired by the disaffected creatures that take to the streets and the bars of the city when the sun goes down.

The album touches on personal tales of long-distance romances, family relationships and depression as well as world-encompassing topics of love, hope and mortality. This is all delivered with a vivid and poetic lyricism certain to appeal to fans of artists like Rufus Wainwright, The National, Sufjan Stevens and Perfume Genius.

Produced by Aneek Thapar and recorded in South London, Night Music’s backdrop is one of intimate pianos, orchestral strings and minimalist percussion that perfectly encapsulate the album’s title.

Beyonce as a straight woman will never once hold.’ – QX magazine

Bonner has regularly worked with LGBT charities, being a gay artist himself. His interests in social issues have also extended to substance abusers and the homeless, having worked voluntarily and professionally as a support worker.

Having already released two well-received previous albums, Bonner will hopefully build on his success with this new release. Already, he has received previous airplay on stations such as BBC 6 Music and MTV Italy, and achieved press coverage from Grazia, Gay Times, Attitude, Time Out London and RTE Ireland.

Although based in London, the artist has spent a lot of time recently living out of a suitcase, touring extensively across the UK, Ireland, Europe, Australia and the US.

Rock Band ‘The Lightness Of Being’

It’s not only their musical backgrounds that are diverse; singer Gabriel is originally from Singapore, Sam has lived in Japan and the US and Sergio is from Poland. The band came together after Gabriel and Sergio struck up a chance conversation – and despite coming from all walks of life they soon began rehearsing and playing shows in London.

The Lightness of Being have already been backed by big names in the music industry – they have worked with The Breeders’ engineer Nick Trepka, played with up-and-coming blues rock band Graveltones, and have headlined venues around London. And with the release of ‘Movements’ they’re bound to turn even more heads in 2015.
